The Use of Passive Voice in News Reports for Political Purposes

This study aims to identify the purposes of passive construction in political news reports. The also examines how use voice affects readers' attitudes towards issues. can lead ambiguity, affecting clarity meaning by hiding identity doer action. However, being vague about action is primarily deliberate serve particular purposes. To collect data, researchers refer three newspapers, namely Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and Guardian. Some articles discussing issues were carefully chosen from those newspapers. analysis results reveals that used selected reports fulfill four main purposes; first, when journalist emphasizes rather than action, he omits phrase, replacing it with marginal information. Second, subject sentence core discussion, ends phrase. Third, writers avoid assigning responsibility anybody. Fourth, modal auxiliaries want express their opinion clearly what possible, necessary, or prohibited. contribute actively changing views recipients.
